Les Mamelles de Tiresias (Poulenc) - Tiresias (cover) - Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme

October 01, 2012 to October 21, 2012 |Performances on October 18, 19, & 21

Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh, England

Poulenc’s deliciously surreal one-act opera was perhaps a surprise choice for the 1958 Aldeburgh Festival. It was done in a unique version for 12 singers and two pianos which Britten arranged for himself and Poulenc to play. Britten and Pears also assisted in making a translation of the libretto into English as well as transposing the baritone role of the Husband for Pears. This course aims to recreate that performance for the first time in over half a century. The two piano parts will be taken by the incomparable duo of Malcolm Martineau and Roger Vignoles, who will also coach alongside Janis Kelly.

Alcott’s beloved novel is the inspiration for Mark Adamo’s masterpiece opera, Little Women. Told from Jo’s point of view, this coming of age story of four sisters living in 19th century Concord illustrates the passage of time as both exciting and heartbreaking. Produced by Opera del West and sung in English by many of their favorite singers hailing from New England’s most prestigious conservatories.

Opera Boston celebrates National Opera Week (Nov. 13—22) along with opera companies all over the country, by presenting a FREE installment of the popular Opera Boston Underground cabaret series on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009. This special National Opera Week program is called “Operatic Acrobatics: Opera Without a Net."

Ten young Opera Boston singers will perform difficult, high-wire repertoire from the operatic canon, complete with death-defying feats. According to director Adrienne Boris, “We’re not shying away from doing real opera in a bar setting. These singers have big voices and are in total technical command of some really exciting material."

Opera Boston Underground will be hosted by Opera Boston Music Director Gil Rose.
